Fissure sealants are a safe and painless way of protecting your child’s teeth from decay. A sealant is a protective plastic coating, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth.
If your kid has higher risk of having decay, such as deep and narrow pits and grooves in teeth, snack often, irregular brushing, not using Fluoride toothpaste etc, fissure sealants could be right for them
Having fissure sealants applied is a quick and painless procedure that usually takes only a few minutes per tooth. There is no need for anesthetic and usually no drilling is involved.
During the procedure your dentist will:
- Clean and dry the tooth
- Prepare the tooth surface so that the sealant bonds well
- Paint on the sealant, which will flow into the grooves and pits of your teeth
- Bond and harder the sealant
- Check your bite and polish off any excess sealant
