Baby teeth extractions

A baby tooth extraction, is the surgical removal of a primary tooth. The most common causes of tooth extraction for children include:

  • Tooth decay is too extensive for restoration
  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment
  • Baby teeth fail to fall out before permanent teeth come in

What to expect

There are 2 types of baby teeth extractions, simple and surgical. A simple extraction involves puling a baby tooth that is clearly visible in the mouth. The simple extraction involves using a device called an ‘elevator’ to loosen the tooth and then pulling it out with forceps. These extractions normally will only call for local anesthetic.

Surgical extraction is required if the tooth is embedded in the jaw bone or partially covered by the jaw bone. A surgical extraction can be performed with local anesthetic and/or happy gas.
